In New York, we've done much better with a raffle than we did with 10% of food and drinks. Here's the idea: Craft beer is big now, and craft beer businesses are eager to promote themselves. Find a bar that stocks many craft beers on tap and in bottles. Request any Friday evening non-exclusively -- RtR guests will just mix in with regulars. Request from the bar a gift certificate ($10, $50, $100, whatever) donated to the raffle prize. Then, get a nearby microbrewery to donate to the…

Request from the bar a gift certificate ($10, $50, $100, whatever) donated to the raffle prize. Then, get a nearby microbrewery to donate to the raffle prize; often, they will donate a growler and free fill. Then, get a nearby craft beer store to donate a 4-pack of select craft beers. On the event night, put the raffle prize items on a central table, so everybody can see them. Circulate a list of prize items (like the attached), and a RtR brochure to everyone in the bar (not just RtR guests). Go around constantly for about two hours, selling as many $5 raffle tickets as you can. Some people will buy numerous tickets. Announce the winner after two hours. 100% of the ticket sales go to RtR, plus dozens of bar regulars get to learn about RtR.
Post-Event Report - Montreal B4Btag:beersforbooks.ning.com,2010-06-18:2831864:Topic:88502010-06-18T04:26:11.000ZPatrick McCoyhttps://beersforbooks.ning.com/profile/PatrickMcCoy

Hi Gary,

Thanks again for all your support and especially for following up after our event. Overall, for our first Beers 4 Books event (our first RTR event actually), we are extremely happy with the turnout. We raised over 300 books (306 to be exact) which seems to be less that the numbers I see in the discussion board, but since RTR is still fairly unknown in Montreal, we are really pleased with the results.

We had a dual objective that night:
1) build awareness of RTR in Montreal where the organization is fairly unknown.
2) support Local Language Publishing Program and

We were suprised that people ended up recruiting so many others to join! We had a table out with examples of publications from RTR, left bookmarks on the bar tables and even had a donation box. Colin and I spent a lot otime speaking to guests, sharing our reasons for being involved in RTR, what we hope to achieve etc.

We didn't have much time to plan since Colin and I were basically organizing on our own. What we would do differently:
- Plan earlier
- Have a true planning committee to help our with various elements
- Organize a silent auction or raffle at the door which we didn't have time to do (but will definitely next time!)
- Have someone in charge of pictures

Following the event a number of guests expressed interest in being involved in this great organisation so we are now formalizing our Chapter committee which is great news for us!

Thanks again for helping us out. Your documents on the Beers4Books website were amazing. We will definitely be doing this again, even discussing with other Canadian Chapters to do a nationwide B4B on the same day in September!

Take care and thanks again,
Sandra
The 47 Prefecture Challengetag:beersforbooks.ning.com,2009-02-22:2831864:Topic:2082009-02-22T09:08:25.000ZPatrick McCoyhttps://beersforbooks.ning.com/profile/PatrickMcCoy
Help us have a Beers for Books event happen in every prefecture in Japan in 2009! Do you know people, places, networks that we can reach out to to introduce Beers for Books outside of Tokyo? This is the place to share information and strategies to help fill the Japan map.
